Day 5 – SDG 5: Gender Equality

In a public setting, a comfort room for all genders is still a debate. In history, girls are still seen as meant for the home. In household chores, work still depends on your gender. And in the Philippines today,  women and LGBTQ+ students and individuals still face discrimination, exclusion, and even violence. The proposed SOGIE Equality Bill remains stalled in Congress. These are not isolated moments; they are patterns repeated in offices, schools, and communities worldwide.

Equality begins when a girl is told her voice matters as much as anyone else’s. It begins when a woman is given the same opportunities, respect, and safety as a man. It begins when every person, regardless of gender identity – can live without fear. Yet, progress remains slow. As of January 2026, women held only 27.4% of seats in national parliaments globally, up just 0.2 points from the previous year. In local governments, women’s representation stagnated at around 35.6%. In the Philippines, women’s participation in politics has improved but remains far from parity. In 2025, women held about 27.3% of national parliamentary seats and 35.5% of local government positions, still well below the 50% target for 2030.

This is not just unfair, it is costly. Without equality, economies lose. When women  individuals are excluded from leadership, education, and fair pay, entire communities suffer. With equality, societies thrive. Women’s empowerment and LGBTQ+ inclusion drive better health, education, and economic outcomes for families and nations.
