Day 6 – SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

A child walks two kilometers with an empty gallon and pail, hoping the well has water today. A family boils rainwater, unsure if it is safe to drink and if it will make him sick. A mother turns on the faucet expecting clean water —instead, a trickle of brown water comes out, where every drop costs a peso. These are not scenes from the past; they are realities for billions in 2026.

Across the world and in parts of the Philippines, water access is still unequal, water is luxury, reminding us that something so essential should never depend on luck or location. Water is life, yet access remains unequal. By 2024, 74% of the global population had safely managed drinking water, 58% had safely managed sanitation, and 80% had basic hygiene services. But this still leaves 2.1 billion people without safe water, 3.4 billion without safe sanitation, and 1.7 billion without basic hygiene.

In the Philippines, progress is uneven. In some regions, over 90% of families have at least basic drinking water service, yet many still rely on unsafe sources or spend hours fetching water. Sanitation coverage is improving but gaps persist, especially in rural and vulnerable communities.

his is not just about filling a glass; it is about filling a promise for the future. Without clean water, health fails. Diarrhea, cholera, and malnutrition spread. Without sanitation, dignity is lost. Girls miss school, women face risks, and communities remain trapped in poverty.

At Colegio de Kidapawan, SDG 6 reminds us that sustainability begins with the basics: clean water, safe toilets, and hygiene for all. It is not just infrastructure; it is justice.
