Day 9 – SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

A rural health center waits for several years for a basic ultrasound machine. Some farmers need to travel miles to reach the market, watching their produce fry in the heat. Meanwhile, the community that was promised progress is left with nothing. The request was approved, the budget was allocated, but the equipment never arrived.

Across the Philippines, innovations that could transform health, agriculture, and education remain unrealized. We have excellent universities; students present research and brilliant innovations, from low-cost medical devices to sustainable farming tools. But they stay trapped in classrooms and remain prototypes because funding is scarce and support is limited while budgets vanish into projects that are overpriced, delayed, or never completed. The ideas are there. The talent is there. But the funding, the real infrastructure for progress—is missing. These are not gaps from the past; they are barriers that hold back progress in 2026.

Infrastructure and innovation are the backbone of development. When infrastructure fails, lives are lost. Yet, access remains unequal. Globally, in 2025, only about 12% of people in least developed countries had access to broadband internet, compared to far higher rates in developed regions. Manufacturing value added as a share of GDP remains stagnant in many countries, limiting industrial growth.

In the Philippines, internet penetration reached 83.8% in 2025, with 97.5 million users online. Mobile speeds improved significantly, and broadband coverage expanded. Yet, 18.8 million Filipinos remain offline, and fiber optic coverage reaches only parts of the territory. Manufacturing’s share of GDP dropped to around 15% in 2024, one of the lowest in East Asia and the Pacific.

Without infrastructure, communities are left behind. Without innovation, industries cannot compete. With resilient infrastructure and inclusive industrialization, economies thrive. Roads, power, internet, and technology open doors to education, health, and opportunity.
